Students Clear up Oldfield Park Station

Article Date: June 10, 2010

Students and local residents rolled up their sleeves to weed and clear a patch of land to make for planting at Oldfield Park railway station.

The city's council-backed Student Community Partnership (SCP) liaised with June Player, founder of the On-Board community group, to encourage a dozen student volunteers to work at Highland Terrace. Mrs Player said: "We were really pleased to have the support of student volunteers for this clear-up".

"This well-used public pathway now looks much better and I hope students will have an ongoing input into the On-Board group, including the maintenance of a small section of the station."

Her group has taken the station under its wing for some years, and last year won an award in the South West in Bloom competition. The work was part of a week-long programme of volunteering run by Bath Spa University Students' Union.

Its president Joey Cozens-Smith said: "This was a great opportunity for students and local residents to get to know each other, and also for students to give something back to the community which they are part of."

SCP chair Councillor Francine Haeberling (Con, Saltford) said: "By taking part in community clean-ups like this, students can do their reputation a lot of good and have fun and make new friends at the same time. The partnership is pleased to have worked with the On- Board group to make this happen."
